MANDALA represents a balanced universe. When people go inside of the mandala shaped sculpture, their presence creates sounds and visuals projected on the playa directly around where they move. They will create one large flowing mandala visual over the ground as well as a symphony of sound.
The central part is a lotus petal covered dome. The lotus petals are large and made from 5 different colors of patina copper. The dome represents the center of the cosmos as a blooming flower. Outward in diameter from the dome lies a square of intricately carved wooden planks encircling the dome, laid out on the ground. Further out in diameter from the square is an outer circle of LED lights.
Inside of a lotus petal covered dome, the existence of human bodies will make drawings on the ground inside of the dome, as well as create unique sounds. The drawings will keep changing and growing as a part of a larger mandala visual. When a person moves, some visuals on the ground will follow them, and other visuals may dissolve or disappear, reflecting an impermanent world within. When several people are in the dome, each person's drawing keeps growing and connecting with others, forming one large flowing mandala visual.
Each visual connects with its own unique sound, depending on the location of someone on the ground. This interaction will evoke a sense of wonder, inducing people to move with both awareness and playfulness. It does not matter how old or how mobile they are, people’s body movements will express their wonder, creating a natural dance. With several people on the floor, each drawing will expand and connect with others, and each sound will combine together in harmony. People will not only play and dance with the installation, but also with each other.
